Hurricane season is here

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially commenced on June 1 and is projected to be more active than usual. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipates 13 to 19 named storms, with 6 to 10 potentially developing into hurricanes and 3 to 5 reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher). This marks the tenth consecutive year of above-average hurricane activity, influenced by factors such as warmer Atlantic waters and a possible La Niña pattern.

What’s New for 2025

NOAA has introduced several updates to enhance preparedness and communication:

  • Earlier Forecasts: The National Hurricane Center will now release forecasts and storm tracks up to 48 hours before a storm’s potential formation, aiding in early preparedness.
  • Updated Storm Cone: A revised storm cone graphic includes inland warnings, providing a clearer picture of potential impacts beyond coastal areas.
  • Inundation Mapping: Nationwide flood risk maps are being developed to help residents visualize potential flooding scenarios.
  • Rip Current Risk Maps: New maps will be issued when tropical systems are present, highlighting areas at risk for dangerous rip currents.
  • Enhanced Forecasting Systems: Upgrades to NOAA’s hurricane forecast system aim to improve tracking accuracy and intensity predictions by approximately 5%.

Preparation Tips

Residents in hurricane-prone areas are advised to:

  • Assemble an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
  • Review Insurance Policies: Ensure homeowners and flood insurance policies are up to date and provide adequate coverage.
  • Create an Evacuation Plan: Know your evacuation routes and have a plan for sheltering, especially if you live in coastal or flood-prone areas.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather updates for the latest information on storm developments.
