Trump to accept luxury jet from Qatar to use as Air Force One

President Donald Trump is reportedly set to receive a luxurious Boeing 747-8 aircraft from Qatar’s royal family, intended for use as Air Force One during his second term. Valued at approximately $400 million, this “flying palace” is expected to be retrofitted by U.S. defense contractor L3Harris to meet presidential specifications. The arrangement includes plans to transfer the aircraft to Trump’s presidential library foundation upon the conclusion of his term.

While the Qatari government confirms discussions regarding the plane’s transfer, it denies that a final decision has been made or that the aircraft is being gifted. Legal advisors within the Trump administration, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, have reportedly concluded that accepting the plane is legally permissible, asserting that it does not violate the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause since the gift is not conditioned on any official act and is being transferred to the U.S. government before eventual donation to the presidential library.

Critics, however, express concerns over potential ethical and constitutional implications. Representative Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) has called for an immediate ethics review and investigation into the matter, labeling the aircraft a “flying grift.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also criticized the move, suggesting it contradicts Trump’s “America First” stance.

The current Air Force One fleet comprises aging Boeing 747-200 aircraft, with replacements delayed until at least 2027. The proposed acquisition of the Qatari jet aims to serve as an interim solution amidst these delays. Trump is expected to discuss the arrangement during his upcoming visit to Qatar as part of a broader Middle East tour.
