Matthijs de Ligt’s last-gasp header rescued a 2-2 draw for Manchester United at Tottenham after Richarlison thought he had scored a stoppage-time winner in a chaotic finale.

United led through Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half header until Spurs substitute Mathys Tel’s impressive 84th-minute equaliser kickstarted a late comeback for the hosts, who took the lead through Richarlison seven minutes later.

An injury to substitute Benjamin Sesko – after he wasted a glorious chance immediately following Spurs’ equaliser – left United down to 10, but they somehow clawed their way back as De Ligt headed in at the back post from a corner in the sixth and final minute of stoppage time.

Spurs had never taken the lead after the regulation 90 minutes in a Premier League game and not won, while United became the first team in the competition since August 2012 to score the opening goal, go behind and not lose in successive games.

Victory would have taken either side up to second in the table, but neither showed enough to be worthy of that position in a strange game between last season’s Europa League finalists. Spurs move up to third, while United are seventh for now.

United gave up a lead by conceding two quickfire goals for just as they did at Nottingham Forest, while Spurs looked toothless for long periods – as they had in that wretched defeat to Chelsea – failing to register a shot on target until the 54th minute.

Spurs won all four meetings between the sides last season, including the Europa League final in Bilbao, and continue to be a bogey team for United, whose winless run against this opposition now extends to eight games.

Frank responds to Spurs fans booing his sub

Spurs fans booed head coach Thomas Frank’s decision to remove Xavi Simons when United were leading, only for his replacement, Tel, to bring them level four minutes and 45 seconds after coming on.

“Sometimes you’re lucky,” said Frank of his substitution. “Every single time I take a decision to sub a player, it is only with one aim: to win the game.

“Mathys did well. Great goal, great involvement,” he added of the 20-year-old, who has equalled his league tally of two goals from last season in five games fewer.

Amorim: We need to look at ourselves

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim on TNT Sports:

“During the game we felt like the three points were there to take home. But then with everything that happened, Harry Maguire and Casemiro coming off and conceding two goals, we scored again and it’s a point.

“When you cannot win you don’t lose, once again we did that. We have so much to grow as a team, because today was our day to win this game.

“We need to look at ourselves, we were not pressing with the same intensity, we felt comfortable but we need to understand that if we had more bravery we kill the game. But sometimes this happens, you have a better first half than second.

“We believe in our capacity to score goals until the last minute.”
